Social Change Poster Contest Rules

Through art, we can challenge many of our society's deepest assumptions, building upon the power of artistic creation and expression to:

        • spark new ideas

        • catalyze critical thinking

        • elicit new actions

        • inspire individuals

        • and create visions

Area Artists of all ages and backgrounds may submit art, comics, zines, poetry (both written and performed), dance, music and other kinds of performances.

Making and supporting art is an act of resistance.  It’s a vote for the kind of world and communities we want to inhabit. Let’s come together and celebrate expression, creativity and soulfulness in the face of fear, apathy and resignation.

There will be two categories for entries: STUDENT and ADULT.

The Student contest is open to individuals who are 17 or under on November 1, 2017.   The Adult category is open to all others.

Entries must be 11” x 17” and should be mounted on foam board.

Only one entry per individual is allowed, and each entry must be the work of only one person. All artwork must be the individual’s original creation. Duplications are not accepted.

All media is accepted. Note: Chalk, charcoal and pastel entries should be sealed with a fixative spray to prevent smearing. Do not laminate entries. Three-dimensional entries will not be accepted. Nothing may be glued, stapled or attached to the artwork in any way.

All artist signatures or initials should be written on the back of the poster. Name, surname, age and school (if applicable), phone number and email should be clearly written at the back of the poster.

All entries have to be received at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota, FL 34236 by October 20, 2017. They can be dropped off or mailed to the address above.   Selected entries will be displayed at the Art for Social Change exhibit opening at Fogartyville on Saturday, October 28th from 7-10pm. All artists will be invited to attend.

Poster contest winners will be chosen at the Critical Times Conference Kickoff on Friday, November 3rd through a ranked choice voting election by attendees. Cash Prizes will be awarded for both the adult and student categories. (1st prize - $75, 2nd prize - $50, 3rd prize - $25)

Participants accept all responsibility for late, lost, misdirected or illegible entries. The Peace Education and Action Center is not responsible for entries damaged, destroyed or lost during the judging process. In consideration for the opportunity to enter the Poster Contest, participants agree to allow the Peace Education and Action Center to use their names and photographs for promotional and publicity purposes.
